 AN UNEXPECTED PLEASURE

On a blustery, drizzly grey day in February 2026 I had the pleasure of visiting Quinta de São Sebastião. On invitation, Estate Tourism Manager Pedro Vieira kindly picked me up at my hotel in Lisbon, to then drive through rich alluvial lowlands, over bleak, very windy hilltops to the historic Estate.

So windy in fact ( - I feared my colleague would take off), that the landscape is understandably dotted with windmills. The Province of Estremadura lies Beyond the Douro to which the small village of Arruda dos Vinhos belongs. Established in 1160, the wine route and transit point for horse-drawn carts taking wine to Lisbon, is located within the Lines of Torres - strategically erected 19th century defence lines and strongholds visible to this day.

The region is steeped in history; tradition and legends tangible about which Pedro has more than one tale to tell. Stories of miracles surrounding Patron Saint Sebastião, of visiting pilgrims, the strength of faith and with it - countless superstitions.

Viticulture has been practised here for over a thousand years much thanks to the regions` diversified micro-climate. The vines grown in DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) Arruda enjoy a maritime influence, flanked in the east by the Atlantic and protected in the west by mountainous slopes. With warm summers, limestone, sandstone and marl clay soils – but most importantly - winemaker Filipe Sevinate Pintos` expertise, Quinta de São Sebastião produce high-class wines yet rarely encountered outside Lisbon.

 A SENSE OF BELONGING

Quinta de São Sebastião lies just south of Arruda dos Vinhos and with the purchase of the 18th century estate in the 1980`s, António Parente found his true place of belonging. Recognising the landmarks` potential - a strong connection to the land and nature, also his love for horses have successfully turned the Quinta`s physical realm into a thriving winery. Quite unique to Quinta de São Sebastião is not only its’ spirit. The equestrian centre is an absolute highlight for all visiting guests, with a display of horsemanship often integrated into the popular Wine Experience.

Winemaker Filipe Pinto`s first harvest was in 2012 shortly after he joined the project. For Filipe, WINE is the cornerstone of life itself and together with António, they are placing Estremadura wines back on the map. The thirty-five hectares of vineyards are planted with both indigenous and international varieties: Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz (Aragonês) together with Syrah and Merlot - Sauvignon Blanc with Arinto and Cercial.

The whole Wine Portfolio represents the soil on which it grows, the climate and each and every individual involved in wine production: reds are full-bodied and elegant - often refined in oak - whites, structured and crisp with a hint of salty maritime breeze.

Quinta de São Sebastião targets both national and international markets – with wine profiles tailored accordingly. From every day drinking through to Reserva – the brands take inspiration from several sources. Mina Velha for example, is named after an old mining network, tunnels of which run under the Estate. Q.S.S.rare - born of a collaboration with the Portuguese League for the Protection of Nature (LPN).

The Quinta`s Flagship though, their SIGNATURE wines.

A SPECIAL PROGRAMME

Having visited the surrounding vineyards, the beautiful old chapel and the stables, Pedro - who is a bible of historical information - also a professional when it comes to the presentation of wine, wasn`t finished with me yet. Determined to pack in as much as possible in the short time available, I was privileged enough to also visit the Wine Cellars themselves.

The wines are not vinified onsite but in a building adapted for purpose in Arruda dos Vinhos. Here, contemporary wine-themed Artwork adorns the cellar walls on the inside - natural cork on the outside for insulation. At each stage of production, environmental responsibility and awareness play a deciding role in all processes:  from choice of materials and packaging, to energy and water consumption - going hand in hand with minimal intervention wine-making practices.

The Tasting Room
The Tasting Room

On return to the Estate, an aesthetically furnished Tasting Room enjoys panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. Your attention though, will be drawn to the long glass window overlooking the Dressage Arena. To my surprise and pleasure, I not only tasted an extensive assortment of Quinta de São Sebastião wines, but enjoyed a display of Horsemanship at its` absolute finest.

Another wonderful surprise was the late lunch served after the Tasting in the old wine cellar. Here, food is provided either at the long wooden table - suitable for larger groups - or even in one of the two granite Lagares also situated in the room.

Lunch was a simple but tasty affair, freshly prepared onsite and based on a recipe dating back to the Napoleonic Era.

The slow-cooked beef and vegetables were delicious (so good in fact, that I forgot to take photos!). It was also a welcome and necessary soak-up following the eleven-fold wine-presentation which included :

1.    Q.S.S RARE VINHO VERDE DOC BRANCO – A Winemaker`s Selection produced from Arinto, Loureiro and Trajadura grapes sourced in Northern Portugal. An amazingly refreshing white wine with lemon, lemon and more lemon on the palate! Rigid acidity, low alcohol (9,5 VOL.%) and a hint of fruity sweetness on the lengthy finish make this a great wine for pairing, especially with light fish dishes, salat and Hors d'oeuvres.

2.    Q.S.S. RARE VINHO REGIONAL LISBOA Rosé – grown on the hilly slopes of Arruda dos Vinhos, this palatable blend of Touriga Nacional and Syrah boasts a mouthful of red fruit – redcurrant and strawberry - and a hint of spice. Tannins are low, well integrated, hence smooth on the palate. The overall mouthfeel is silky and fresh despite the poky 13% ABV.

3.    SÃO SEBASTIÃO VINHO REGIONAL LISBOA BRANCO – cool fermentation in stainless steel vats of Sauvignon Blanc and Arinto grapes grown on vineyard sites around Arruda dos Vinhos. Clear pale lemon yellow in the glass with greenish hues. The citrus lime nose mirrors both flavour and the high acidity. A crisp white, but definitely not my wine.

4.    QUINTA DE SÃO SEBASTIÃO DONA ANINHAS RESERVA – dedicated to António`s mother; a beautiful salmon pink blend of predominantly Merlot and Touriga Nacional grapes presented in a transparent glass Pompadour bottle. The bouquet of red fruit literally hits the nose, accompanied by underlying notes of ripe peach. Great freshness thanks to high vineyard altitude and an early harvest. Bâtonnage lends to a creamy texture and maturation in used French oak casks, to complexity. The moderate maritime influence bolsters minerality, enhanced by sharp well integrated acidity. Proud winners of the Grandes Escolhas Press Choice Grand Prize 2025; the overall expression makes this a convincing dry Rosé and a worthy Homage to Madame Aninhas - my overall Tasting Favourite.

5. Q.S.S. RARE RESERVA VINHO REGIONAL LISBOA TINTO – an appealing red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet grown on limestone soil rich in minerals. Following three weeks of controlled fermentation at 25 °C in stainless steel vats, the wines are partially aged for twelve months in French oak. In the glass, a deep garnet red, on the nose - outstanding red and black fruit. The finish is long, the palate full of redcurrant, blackcurrant and blackberry, spiced up with black pepper and a hint of dark chocolate. Concentrated flavours and good acidic structure softly mellowed at the edges by the silky tannins. In comparison to the North American Red Wolf depicted on the label which reaches maturity in its’ second or third year of life, this wine is ready to drink!

6.    SÃO SEBASTIÃO VINHO REGIONAL LISBOA TINTO – a red with more medals than alcohol by volume - fourteen – the latter – 13,5%. Temperature controlled fermentation of Syrah and Tinta Roriz in stainless steel – nope, no oak. The enticingly deep ruby colour and ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry fruit on nose and palate, ends in a black peppery backlashing finish. Truffle notes - possibly deriving the calcareous marl soils - make this a good food-pairer for umami flavours such as strong meaty game- or beef-based stews. The Estates` second most awarded production to date.

7.    ANGRY DUCK RESERVA VINHO REGIONAL LISBOA TINTO – 100 % Cabernet Sauvignon and a tribute to one of the Estates past residents; The Angry Duck - who when approached - showed his true character and personality. Partially aged in French oak for twelve to eighteen months, this red boasts ripe, almost jammy fruit flavours, a hint of tobacco and allspice. The good body in combination with a sweetish fruity finish make this wine a great allrounder for guests, parties, and cheese, among other dishes.

 8.    FORTE DE SÃO SEBASTIÃO SIGNATURE – Forte de Cego lies just a stone`s throw from the Quinta, also known by the locals as Forte de São Sebastião. A wine reflective of its’ name and one with a backbone. Touriga Nacional and Syrah grown on clay-limestone lay the foundation for this SIGNATURE red - one awarded Best in Portugal in 2025. A wine of expression, deep garnet red in the glass with a fruity nose of black cherry, blackberry and spice. With twelve months in French oak the ripe tannins and fine acidity lend structure. On the palate, baskets of forest fruit, earthy mushroom and a hint of tobacco. Great length and a wine ready to drink on its’ own or with a hearty meal.

A QUINTA MUST VISIT, IF EVER IN AND AROUND LISBON

Quinta de São Sebastião is a producer well worth a call and one I am eager to revisit should the opportunity arise. Since Commercial Wine Tourism has not yet taken the upper hand in this part of the woods, the experience is pleasantly personal, warm-hearted, and beautifully authentic - much thanks to Pedro`s contribution.

In addition, there are kilometres of regional hiking trails to discover, and should you need a bed for the night, better three, I very much recommend one particular address which Pedro kindly introduced me to on my visit:

Laurence Vohlgemuth has restored what may be described as nothing less than a ruin on acquiring the premises. Her Bed and Breakfast set-up is 100% unique and just ten minutes from Quinta de São Sebastião. Although I admit to not having stayed there myself, rest assured, the viewing was more than convincing.

You`ll find Laurence on both Facebook and Booking.com - her direct contact as follows:
